About

What are spiders?

There are many thousands of spiders living in the United States. Most live outside and away from people, preying on and keeping populations of garden pests and other insects in check. Some species hunt using their webs to trap their prey, while others run after and hunt down their prey.

Spiders are a type of arachnid and identified by two body segments and eight legs. They lack wings and antennae and have three to four pairs of eyes. Also, spiders produce silk, but not all use their silk to create webs. Non-web buildings spiders use their silk to line their burrows, climb, wrap their prey, or build egg sacs.

Examples of spiders that live in the Baton Rouge area include black widow spiders, brown recluse spiders, brown widow spiders, and wolf spiders.

Are spiders dangerous?

Spiders are shy and reclusive by nature and rarely bite people. If a spider bite does occur, in most cases, no harm will result. In the United States, two spiders are considered dangerous, and can cause health problems in the people they bite: the black widow spider and the brown recluse. Unfortunately, both of these spiders live in our area. The good news is that while a bite from either type of spider could cause problems, the symptoms are very treatable by a medical professional.

Spiders are mainly nuisance pests because of the webbing they place in less than ideal places and because many people have a deep-rooted fear of these leggy creatures.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Spiders are predators and feed on insects. Yards with lots of grass, trees, and gardens are typically home to large populations of both pests. When spiders live in your yard, there is a good chance they'll find their way into your home, garage, shed, or barn following their prey or searching for a quiet place to lay eggs. The presence of spiders in your house may be an indicator of an overall pest problem in your home or on your property.

Where will I find spiders?

In general, spiders are going to live in or near dark, secluded areas. Outside they are most often found in tall grass, shrubbery, landscaping plants, and gardens. They also like to hide behind window shutters and shingles and in doorways or under roof eaves.

Inside, spiders prefer to hide out in the dark, less-traveled areas of our homes, sheds, and garages. Basements, attics, wall voids, vents, and crawl spaces are common places spiders hide, hunt insects, and build their webs.

How can I prevent spiders in the future?

Help keep spiders out of your home with the help of the following, easy-to-implement spider prevention tips:

  • Spiders love to use the branches of trees and shrubs to gain easy access to the outside of homes and other buildings. Keep shrubs cut back away from the exterior walls of your home.
  • Keep spiders from breaking the barrier into your home by sealing cracks in the foundation and walls of your home.
  • Make sure screens in windows and doors are secure and free of rips.
  • Replace outdoor lights with LED lights that are far less attractive to the insects that spiders love to eat.
  • Removing a spider's web is very annoying to them. If you continue to remove webs, they will get the hint and will move on.
  • Put into place a year-round pest control program to control and eliminate the pests both inside and outside your home that spiders are feeding on.
